PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING STUDENT AVIATION MEDICAL AND SPL (STUDENT PILOT LICENSE) IN THAILAND
According to DCA regulations, a student pilot cannot log flight time in their logbook until they have a valid SPL (Student Pilot License).
To get a student pilot license, the student must do the following:
1. Join the Thai Flying Club (10,000 baht).
2. Request a letter from the Thai Flying Club, signed by the Thai Flying Club committee member (usually at club only on Sundays) to Bhumipol Hospital (Thai Air Force Hospital, Phaholyothin Road, Bangkok) requesting a medical exam for the student pilot (no other hospital can do this exam).
3. Make appointment with Bhumipol Hospital for the medical exam (physical exam and psychological exam) and bring the letter to the Bhumipol Hospital Aviation Medicine Center. You have to pay a medical exam fee of approximately 2,500 baht. You must call and book this exam in advance (call Major Pongpan 02-5344078 or 02-5342610). Note that the physical exam takes about four hours and the psychological exam takes about three hours, and the tests may be scheduled separately.
4. After the medical exam is finished, ask the Thai Flying Club to call Bhumipol Hospital and request the medical certificate. Note that for one recent student it took two months from the start of the exam until the medical certificate was received.
5. Send the
application form for a Student Pilot License along with four 1"x1" photos, copy of passport (ID and house papers if Thai citizen) and work permit or permanent address to the Thai Flying Club.
6. The Thai Flying Club will send the application and medical certificate to the DCA and the Student Pilot License will be issued in about one month.
PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING YOUR PRIVATE PILOT LICENSE IN THAILAND
1. Join the Thai Flying Club (10,000 Baht).

NEWS
We would like to thank our instructors for their fantastic job training at the club. All our instructors have considerable experience flying in Thailand and some of them have been flying in USA and Spain. Some of them have also been flying and teaching in ultralights at Chonburi Flying Club for about 5 years, because they love flying. They work together as a team and share responsibilities with the ground school and the flight instruction. Their style of instruction is very effective, because they sit down with their students for thorough Pre-Flight and Post-Flight briefings to make sure the students maximize their learning time in the air.

MEET SOME OF OUR PREVIOUS STUDENTS

Khun Thiraphat has been an earth scientist for Chevron Texaco for the past 5 years. He has his B.S. in Geology and his Masters in Environmental Engineering. For him, learning to fly is fulfilling his dream of the past 20 years. Now, he has finally saved enough money to start his dream. He is very pleased with Bang Phra ground school, because it is convenient to have the ground school and the planes together and only a one and a half hour drive from Bangkok. He is impressed with the ground school, because the teachers are organized and manage the course well. He especially likes that the instructors listen to his questions and does not laugh if his question appears silly. They will always take the time to listen and answer. The instructors also bring their experience to share with students, and the ground school is affordable for common people who want to fulfill their dream.
Aung runs and owns a small computer software firm in Bangkok called SINAPTIQ. Flying has been his dream since he was very young, and when he was young, he wanted to fly for the Burmese air force. He says you need the passion to learn to fly but also the means. He finally has the chance to realize his dream, and he is pleased with the ground school so far. He especially likes the instructors. He thinks they are enthusiastic, dedicated and sincere. He gets the feeling that they don't teach for money, but for their personal interest and passion for flying. Aung also likes the feel of learning at the airport and he enjoys the drive from Bangkok to Bang Phra.
Rajan Bakshi is from New Delhi in India. He owns a cable and internet service and is a criminal defense lawyer. He has always wanted to scuba dive with sharks and learn to fly. He made his first dream come true in the Maldives, and now he is enrolled at the TFC ground school to learn to fly. He thinks Bang Phra is a beautiful and there are many places to fly - over the sea, over the khao kheo mountains, over koh sichang island - and he loves being able to learn the ground school and then to fly at the same place. He also loves the relaxed setting which makes learning more enjoyable. Congratulations to Rajan for getting his license in Apr2007.
Angie Delarosa is from Manila, Philippines. She has lived 2 years in Bangkok and 3 years in Phuket. She has a swimsuit trading company which imports swimsuits into Thailand. She has wanted to get her pilot's license for many years, and her dream is to import a seaplane to fly around Thailand. She already has 12 hours flying in England, and she is very enthusiastic to join the Thai Flying Club ground school.
David Ma is from Hong Kong and is now working in Vientiane, Laos. He is very interested in learning to fly. He had some questions about learning to fly: 1. I am born in 1951 and now age with 53, is it too late for learning to fly? 2. I am prepare to take flying course 3 days a week. so is the best time for the week day? 3. I am not the residence in Thai, am I still can apply as foreign student? I am planning to visit Thai Flying Club this week upon receipt of your reply. Cheers. David Ma. Contract Facilities Manager. Craig Colby has completed his written exam in USA with 90% and then his checkride. He was flying with Attitude Aviation in USA, and he has been very impressed with the service and quality of instruction. He also spoke with Rich Perkins the owner of Attitude Aviation. He's a retired U.S.A.F. Colonel and flew U-2s out of Beal airforce base. He told him about TFC. Attitudes Training consists of tail wheel, Aerobatics in Pitts, Extra, Decathlon, Grob, Waco and Yak aircraft. Also mountain, emergency recovery procedures etc. Single engine jet is also avail. Multi, IFR, CFI, got it all. www.attitudeaviation.com/services.htm
Malcolm Harris is signed up for the next ground school in Bang Phra. His motivation to fly goes back a long way... his friends fly in the uk and one is something of an expert competition flyer. He would like to go through twin engine training, learn as much as possible about navigation, and then try for his commercial license. He wants to go one step at a time, and is excited about starting his PPL at Bang Phra. bd_sea@ksc.th.com
Dr. Wirote Lowanitchai is a Dentist in Hua Hin, and he has wanted to be a pilot since he was very young, because his house was near the airport in Korat when he was growing up. RADIO PROCEDURES PRACTICE FOR STUDENTS

http://www.liveatc.net/feedindex.php?type=all This is a link for students to listen to live air traffic controller transmitions. You must have Microsofts "MediaPlayer" or better yet "winamp" installed to listen.. available for free here: http://www.winamp.com/ Once on the ATC website simply scroll down and select any green "Listen" button. I would recommend "JFK Tower" to begin. I would suggest listening to the three different types of communication channels.
- "Ground" they provide taxi and parking information..also clearance to taxi from parking to the runway at which time ground transfers the pilot to "Tower". The pilot will tune in "Tower" and request take off clearance.
- "Tower" they provide primarily take off and landing clearance and some other info.
- "Approach/Clearance" They are the big boys you always see on TV :-). They monitor all the traffic already in the air around their specific area. For example Bangkok or Utapao would monitor the aircraft flying around the airport/airspace. A pilot enroute from Utapao to Bangkok will contact Bangkok "approach" to request transition into Bangkok airspace and also request a landing. Bangkok approach will approve the request (maybe) and issue instructions for "approaching" the airport and the proper landing pattern to use. These are simply the basics... ;-) there is more but I hope you get the general idea. I have provided this information to the best of my knowlege based on the U.S. system so please keep this in mind. Dont quote me :-) read the book !! :-) Submitted by Craig Colby - Student at TFC and former US Navy Aircraft Radio Technicial. Craigstuff@Hotmail.com

SUCCESS  23-25 Nov 2007 - THAI NAVY SEALS "SURVIVAL COURSE for PILOTS" -- The Young Eagles Survival Course was a complete success.
